About Newfoundland Dogs
Newfoundlands were originally bred as working dogs for fishermen in Newfoundland. Their webbed feet, thick double coat, and strong swimming ability make them especially well suited for water rescue work.
Despite their massive size, Newfoundlands are known for their sweet, gentle temperament. They are famously good with children and are often called “gentle giants.”

Because they are people-pleasers, they require plenty of attention, care, and companionship. Like any dog, they also come with important responsibilities, including proper veterinary care, regular grooming, and consistent training.
Size
A male Newfoundland can weigh up to 150 pounds or greater and stand 28 inches at the shoulder; females typically go 100 to 120 pounds.
When considering adopting a Newfie, you must take into account the full grown size and if you will be able to assist with their needs, even if they outweight yourself.
Grooming
With their heavy double coat that allows them to enjoy the winter cold and snow, comes with great responsibilities of grooming weekly, if not daily. A thorough going-over with a slicker brush and a long-toothed comb will remove dead hair and prevent mats from forming.
Training
Newfies can be stubborn, especially in the puppy years. Early socialization and puppy training can assist with shaping their behaviors and have more control of this giant breed. Newfies are eager to please and generally easy to train. They are also affectionate and trusting; they respond well to gentle guidance but don't respond well to harsh corrections or training methods.
